Isaiah 9:6,7

When did the greatest moment in history take place? Or is the greatest moment yet in the future? Many great things have taken place in the history of the universe. The first important event took place before time began in the counsel halls of eternity. In the greatest meeting of minds that has ever taken place the great Triune Godhead planned the end before the beginning. It was then that the great scheme of redemption was set once and for all time. It was there that the Son of God agreed to go to the cross and shed His blood for the eternal security of those who would trust him in the future for salvation. Could this have been the greatest moment of all. Or maybe it was when God performed His first creative act by breathing thousands of angels into existence? Or was the greatest moment when all of a sudden and seemingly out of nowhere and out of nothing an entire universe came into being at God’s command?

Did the greatest moment occur when Christ died on the cross and redeemed the world from sin? Or was it when Christ arose from the dead? Surely this was one of the greater moments of history. Or will the greatest moment take place when Christ charges out of an open door in heaven on His great white steed leading the armies of heaven? Or could it be the Great White throne Judgment? These are all great moments but what one moment out of time and eternity is the greatest of all?

Some of the greatest moments of my life involve the birth of children. The very first thing that I remember in my life is sitting in the back sat of a late 30’s four door sedan. The back door on the opposite side of me opened and my dad placed a bassinet with my new baby brother in the floor board beside me. It was such a grand moment that it started my memory working.

Another great moment involved the birth of my niece, Mandy. About a year later my first nephew, Jonathan was born. A year later the fourth Baptist preacher in the Witcher family was born and I vividly remember seeing Joseph for the first time.

Then years later a little three old girl, named Valerie, walked through our front door and into our hearts. Then three years later my step granddaughter was born. I’ll never forget the time I went to the nursery and saw Vanessa for the first time.

It stands to reason that if some of the greatest moments of my personal life involved the birth of a child then the greatest moment of all time and eternity must have involved the birth of a child. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” What a moment it was when the long awaited and promised Messiah was born. Without doubt this had to be the greatest moment of all. What a monumental moment it was when God’s promises became real in the human flesh of Christ Jesus! John 1:14 “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,…” The moment the Great eternal, omnipresent, omnipotent, omniscient, righteous, and invisible god became man was the greatest moment. This was the moment the prophets wrote about, this was the moment all the faithful Jews had looked forward to for centuries. The fullness of time had come!

This was the moment that the redeemer became flesh and blood. This was the moment when the planner and the maker of the universe became flesh. I Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. This was the moment when the Seed of the Woman, the Seed of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David was born. The Passover Lamb became flesh. The Atonement Offering, the Sin Offering became flesh. The Rock of Ages became flesh. The Rose of Sharon and the Lily of the Valley became flesh. The Alpha and Omega, the Ancient of Days, the Bright and Morning Star, the Star of Jacob, the Day Star, the Desire of all Nations, the Day Spring from on High, the Daysman, the Everlasting Father, the Hope of Glory, the King of Kings, the Lamb of God, the Potentate, the Good Shepherd, and Shiloh became a baby. When a baby is born we expect great things of it and expect it to become a great person. But the greatest being of all time and eternity became a baby. What a child!

Elohim, El Shaddia, Yahweh, the Great Eternal Triune Godhead became flesh in the very person of Jesus. Colossians 1:14-19 “In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;”

In that manger lay the God of the eternal ages, in this child resided the fullness of the entire Godhead. The fullness of the Godhead did not dwell in the father or in the Holy Spirit. But the fullness of the Triune Godhead dwelt in Jesus. The great eternal Triune Godhead became One in Christ and B.C. became A.D. What a moment when God stuffed Himself into just a few pounds of baby flesh. What a perfect package of power, intelligence, and righteousness. What a child! What a baby! What an awesome and majestic being! What a concentration of deity!!!!!!!

THE GREATEST MOMENT — B.C.-A.D.
