Hebrews 6:13-20
13. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
14. Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
15. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
16. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
17. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed
it by an oath:
18. That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
19. Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
20. Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec
This old world and far too many of its inhabitants are without hope. But in spite of everything being bad, there is bright hope for those who have trusted Jesus as their personal Savior. This is not like the Methodist hope which hopes I’ll make it to heaven. It is the absolute guarantee that every saved person will make it. You will not only make it; but according to the inspired Word of God you have already made it. Romans 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. I’m already glorified! Notice this is all written in past tense as if it has already happened. This is a sure and steadfast hope. It’s not a “hope so” religion. I don’t hope to make it, I know for sure that I have already made it. Do you know that you know that you know? Romans 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: Does the Holy Spirit convince you that you are eternally saved? You are either saved or you are not saved. If you are not saved you are lost and hell bound!
THE VERACITY OF GOD. Veracity means adherence to the truth; truthfulness, conformity to fact or truth; accuracy or precision. It means immutability or unchangeableness. Malicah 3:6 For I am the LORD, I change not; This means that because of His righteousness God cannot lie. At the same time it also means because of His power God is bound to do what He says and because of His resources God will do what He says He is going to do! Hebrews 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie… Romans 4:21 And (Abraham) being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. God keeps His Word, forever. So rest in His ...exceeding great and precious promises...
THE UNCHANGEABLE PRIESTHOOD OF CHRIST Hebrews 7:17 For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Hebrews 7:24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. The high priest of Israel was constantly changing. Sometimes when there is a change of administrations some may lose what the last administrator promised them. But there will never ever be a change in God’s divine plan because Jesus Christ is forever our Great High Priest! Hebrews 7:1 changeable priesthood. The high priest of Israel was constantly changing. Sometimes when there is a change of administrations some may lose what the last administrator promised them. But there will never ever be a change in God’s divine plan because Jesus Christ is forever our Great High Priest! Hebrews 7:1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; 2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; 3 Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest, is the eternal God in the flesh!
A STRONG CONSOLATION Hebrews 6:18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation… A consolation prize is given to one who doesn’t win first prize. For instance a basketball team may lose their first game in a tournament which puts them in the consolation bracket. If they win the rest of their games in the tournament, they win the consolation trophy. The child of God doesn’t have what he is promised, yet. We have not made it to heaven, yet, but we have a consolation, a comfort knowing that since God gave His immutable word we will make it! God usually makes a promise before doing something for us and we can rest in that promise as if it has already been filled.
THE BLOOD OATH Hebrews 6:17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: God made a blood covenant which is the strongest agreement that can be made. It is sealed with the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. There is saving and keeping power in the blood of Jesus Christ, our LORD. Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:25
THE REFUGE Hebrews 6:18 ...who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: There is a refuge, a place of safety in this sinful world, even before we make it to heaven. Since the child of God has a refuge his soul is eternally safe regardless of surrounding circumstances. Nothing, absolutely nothing, can harm or even touch the soul of the saved that has laid hold on eternal hope in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
THE SURE AND STEADFAST ANCHOR OF THE SOUL Hebrews 6:19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, The old song says, “We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll, Fastened to the Rock which cannot move. Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.”
THE FORERUNNER Hebrews 6:20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus... Ancient sailing vessels usually carried a small row boat on deck. If the ship got caught out in a storm and couldn’t make it to the harbor, they would put a man, which they called a forerunner, in the row boat along with an anchor on a long rope. The forerunner would row into the harbor and find something solid he could fasten the anchor to. That is exactly what Jesus did after He rose from the grave. Jesus told Mary just after His resurrection, ... Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. John 20:17 Ephesians 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. 9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.) When a king would go into a foreign land and capture it, he would chain up all the captured soldiers, bring them to his homeland, and parade them down the road for all the citizens to see. This was called leading “captivity captive.” He would also distribute the spoils of war to the citizens. Sometime after Jesus talked to Mary He descended into hell not as victim but as a warden goes into his prison. He took the devil and all his henchmen that He had won the victory over on the cross and drug them through the airways of heaven and made a big show out of them. He then entered the Most Holy Place in heaven and sprinkled His blood on the Mercy Seat, thus anchoring our soul in the serene heaven of rest! Thus Jesus became our eternal anchor and hope. Jesus is the only hope this old world has; but He is the only hope she needs. Is Jesus your hope, your anchor, refuge, your consolation. I Timothy 1:1 ¶ Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope; INSIDE THE VEIL Hebrews 6:19 ...which entereth into that within the veil; This was the veil of the Holy of Holies in heaven. Our souls are anchored in heaven! Mark 15:38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. Jesus entered the most Holy Place. This connects us earthlings directly with heavenly things. This puts our refuge, our hope, our anchor in the most holy place in heaven. What a deal! “I’ve anchored my soul in the haven of rest, I’ll sail the wild seas no more. The tempest may sweep over the wild stormy deep, in Jesus I’m safe evermore.”
CONCLUSION: You may ask what if something bad happens to me? As the song says, “The anchor holds.” What if I have cancer? “The anchor holds.” What if I lose my family? “The anchor holds.” What if I sin? “The anchor holds.” What if I suffer like Job? “The anchor holds.” What if? What if? What if? What if? THE ANCHOR STILL HOLDS. Are you having severe problems in your life? Check the anchor rope! YES, THE ANCHOR HOLDS!
HOPE
