Genesis 15:7-21

“God remembers Abraham” and other similar passages are found throughout the Bible. God made a promise to Abraham and sealed it with blood. Because of His blood covenant God remembers Abraham. The greatest promises of God are eternally guaranteed by blood

In ancient times three kinds of covenants or contracts were made. The word “covenant” means a cutting or a dividing. When two men reached an agreement they would tie their wrists together with a leather thong and then they would cut the thong. Each man would keep one half of the thong which served as a constant reminder that they had been bound together in an agreement that must be honored and kept.

Sometimes the contract would be written on a clay tablet and broken in half. Each party would keep a half of the tablet which served as a constant reminder that they had made a promise to one another that they must keep.

The third kind of covenant was a blood covenant which was the strongest and most binding of all. This unbreakable blood covenant lasted as long as the two participants lived. This is the kind of covenant that the everlasting God made to Abraham and his descendants. Genesis 15:7-10

The blood covenant was made by dividing or cutting animals into two pieces. The divided pieces of animals were laid across from one another which left a path between them. The makers of this covenant would walk between the divided pieces of animals. The shed blood of the divided animals served as a constant reminder to the makers of the covenant that they had walked between divided animals which at one time had been one piece as they had been bound together in agreement.

After Abraham prepared the animals for the blood covenant a deep sleep fell on him. Then a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp passed between the divided animals. This symbolized God the Father and God the Son walking between the divided animals thus making a blood covenant between Themselves and sealing their promise to Abraham forever.

GOD REMEMBERED ABRAHAM WHEN HE WOULD HAVE DESTROYED SODOM. Genesis 19:29 “And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.”

Lot was as bad as the wicked people that lived around him but he was saved. II Peter 2:7-9 Before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah He visited Abraham. Abraham asked God not to destroy the cities because there might be some righteous people living there. God cannot destroy the righteous with the unrighteous because of His blood promise. But none could be found except Lot.

In keeping His promise God sent angels to drag Lot out of the city before He destroyed it. Lot didn’t deserve to be saved but he was covered by the blood of the covenant. Therefore God had already obligated Himself to save Lot.  I may not deserve to be saved but I’m eternally saved and secure because I’m covered by the blood of Christ.

GOD REMEMBERED ABRAHAM WHEN HE WOULD HAVE LEFT ISRAEL IN EGYPTIAN BONDAGE. Exodus 2:23, 24 “And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.”

The children of Israel were in a seemingly impossible situation. But God had promised the Jews the land of Israel. God in keeping His blood covenant did what was necessary to free Israel. When God heard their cries He remembered the promise that He had made to the father of their nation and God forced Pharaoh to let them go. Even though Pharaoh changed his mind God destroyed him and his army in the Red Sea. It matters little what the world thinks about the Jews and Israel. When the blood covenant is claimed in the end time Israel will have unquestionable possession of their land. Neither the world nor Satan can argue with the great unforgettable blood covenant that the Eternal God made to the Father of the Faithful. A promise is a promise is a promise! God has to be true to Himself and true with Himself as well as true to others. Since God is able, truthful, and completely reliable: therefore His promises will be fulfilled to the letter.

GOD REMEMBERED ABRAHAM WHEN HE WOULD HAVE DESTROYED ISRAEL FOR WORSHIPING THE GOLDEN CALF. Exodus 32:13 “Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.”

The calf worshipers were under the penalty of death for breaking the first commandment and God would have destroyed them had it not been for Moses pleading the promises of God. In essence Moses said to God, You cannot kill these people because you promised Canaan to them. Moses said the promises were not made to my descendants but to the descendants of Abraham. God then remembered His blood covenant.

I will make it to the heavenly Jerusalem not because of my obedience to the laws of God. But I will make it because I have already claimed the promises of God. The child of God cannot lose his salvation when he sins for his sins are covered by the blood of Jesus.

GOD REMEMBERED ABRAHAM WHEN THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL WERE HUNGRY. Psalms. 105:40-42 “The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river. For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant.”

In the desert God furnished His people with all of their necessities. He didn’t give them all they wanted but He gave them all they needed in order to make it to the promised land. He provided them with bread from heaven (angels’ food), with quail, which is the best meat available, and with pure water in a dry land.

Why? Because He had to keep them alive in order to get them to the promised land. God always remembers his promises and always fulfills His promises. Therefore, the children of God should never worry about having enough nor worry about starving. He promises us our needs!

GOD REMEMBERED ABRAHAM WHEN HE SENT HIS SON Luke 1:54,55 “He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.”

This is Mary’s recognition of the literal fulfillment of the Abrahamic covenant. She realized that the child she was carrying was the Promised One. This is what the Abrahamic covenant is all about. Remember that Abraham was sound asleep when God made the blood covenant. On that night a burning lamp and a smoking furnace passed between the divided animals. That was God the Father and God the Son making a blood covenant between themselves concerning what they would do for Abraham and his descendants. Galatians 3:16 “Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.” Abraham had nothing to do with the making of the covenant because he was sound asleep. God the Father made the covenant with his only begotten Son while Abraham was in a deep sleep. This great act was symbolized by the smoking furnace and burning lamp that passed between the divided animals. Abraham and his descendant (singular) was the recipient of the promises of the covenant. ...to thy seed (singular), which is Christ...

In Genesis 15:1-18 God the Father and God the Son were acting out the agreement that they had made between themselves in the counsel halls of eternity as well as showing its fulfillment on the cross of Calvary. The Son agreed to shed his blood. The covenant was cut on the cross for it was there that our sins divided the Father from the Son. Christ cried out, “My God, why hast thou forsaken me.” Even though our sins separated the first and second persons of the Godhead the blood of Christ constantly reminds the Father that He and Christ had been bound together in an eternal, unbreakable, and unchangeable agreement. The blood constantly reminds God that He made a promise to Christ concerning all the faithful that He has to keep. Thus it is the blood of the covenant that causes God the Father to remember that He has to keep us safe and escort us to our heavenly home. God cannot break His promises for the blood of Christ forces Him to keep them. If you need something plead the blood! The words “remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” will always work. Remember Calvary! Remember the cross! Remember the blood of Christ!

GOD REMEMBERS ABRAHAM TODAY. Romans 4:13 “For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.  The spiritual promises that were made to Abraham were made not to his physical descendants but to his spiritual descendants. Galatians 3:7 “Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.” God will keep His promise to you if you will place your faith in Jesus Christ. Galatians. 3:26 “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.” Become a spiritual descendant of Abraham by placing your faith in Christ. God remembered Abraham when He saved my soul in 1958. Claim His blood and secure the new Jerusalem as your heavenly home. Christ Jesus.” Become a spiritual descendant of Abraham by placing your faith in Christ. God remembered Abraham when He saved my soul in 1958. Claim His blood and secure the new Jerusalem as your heavenly home.

GOD REMEMBERS ABRAHAM FOREVER Psalms 105:8-11 He hath remembered his covenant for ever, the word which he commanded to a thousand generations. Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant: Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance:”

Always remember that a blood covenant lasted as long as the makers of the covenant lived. Since both God the Father and God the Son are eternal so are the promises of his blood covenant to all of those who are His by faith. God has always been aware of His promises to Abraham and He will continue to keep those promises for He cannot possibly forget the precious promise that He made to His only begotten Son in the counsel halls of eternity because of the blood which He shed on the cross of Calvary. I Peter 1:19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,

GOD REMEMBERS ABRAHAM
